Visitor Visa

Visiting Canada is an experience like no other. Think majestic mountains, rolling hills, awe-inspiring national parks, not to mention vibrant city life, bustling markets and shopping districts, as well as historic landmarks just waiting to be explored.

Canada is a vast, dynamic country that attracts millions of travellers annually. However, you will need a Canadian Visitor Visa or an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) to visit Canada.

A Canadian Tourist Visa (Visitor Visa) or eTA is needed to enter Canada legally.

Canadian Visitor Visa Requirements

The factors that determine if you need a Canadian Visitor Visa or an eTA are:

  • Your type of travel document,
  • Your nationality,
  • The country where your travel document was issued,
  • How do you plan to travel to Canada, and
  • Your reasons for visiting Canada.

To be deemed eligible to apply for a Canadian Tourist Visa, you’ll need to:

  • Have a valid travel document,
  • Be able to prove that you have ties and intend to return home after your travels, e.g., job, financial assets etc.,
  • Be admissible to Canada.
  • Be in good health (medical certificate),
  • Have a clear criminal record (police clearance), and
  • Have sufficient funds for your stay and return flight/fare.

An Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) is for visa-exempt travellers visiting Canada by air. It’s generally valid for five years.

You may be required to provide additional supporting documentation, such as your itinerary. (hotel reservations, flight details etc.)

How to Apply

All applications for Canadian Visitor Visas and eTAs are done online unless deemed eligible to apply on paper, such as if you have a disability.

Step 1: Create an online account and complete the application form.

Step 2: Gather supporting documentation - you may need documents like your passport, hotel reservations, flight details, proof of funds, etc.

Step 3: Complete and submit your Canadian Tourist Visa application - you’ll need to upload your supporting documentation along with your application and may be required to attend an interview.

Step 4: Receive a decision letter and letter of instruction to submit your passport - your visa will be added to your travel document. Your length of stay will be determined by border services when you arrive in Canada. (usually up to six months)
