Medicare, Canada’s publicly-funded universal health care system, provides free healthcare to all Canadian permanent residents and citizens.

Canada has also announced improvements on the horizon:

Dental Care for Canadians – 5.3 billion in investments over the next five years to provide dental care to low-income households.
Loan Forgiveness for Doctors and Nurses in Rural and Remote Communities – $26.2 million in funding over four years and $7 million in ongoing funding to increase forgivable student loans by 50%.
Research Long-Term Impacts of COVID-19 – $20 million in funding over five years to research the long-term effects of COVID-19.
Improve Canada’s Dementia and Brain Health Research – $20 million in funding over five years to improve the treatment of dementia and promote brain health.
Wellness Together Canada Portal – $140 million over two years in funding to provide mental health support.
Opioid Crisis – $100 million over three years to support the Substance Use and Addictions Program.

How Does Health Care Work in Canada?

Medicare is publicly-funded through taxes and provides primary healthcare services to permanent residents and citizens of Canada, as well as temporary residents on work or study permits. (tourists or visitors are not eligible and must have personal health insurance before arriving in Canada.)

Medicare covers the following healthcare services:

– Emergency medical services.
– Inpatient hospital and doctor visits.
– Family doctor visits and outpatient clinic appointments.
– Cancer support (in hospital) and mental health services. (cancer centre)
– Radiation therapy, chemotherapy, hydration therapy etc.
– Diagnostic Tests, Bloodwork, Scans, and Genetic Testing.

It generally does not provide the following:

– Prescription and over-the-counter medication,
– Dental cover, or
– Vision cover.

Please note: Each province or territory has its own health care plan, covering different health care products and services.

How to Get Public Health Insurance in Canada

To be able to receive free public health care in Canada you will need to apply for a health insurance or Care Card in the province or territory you live in.

Step 1: Check your eligibility.
Step 2: Complete the application form.
Step 3: Gather supporting documentation – you may need documents that preview your residency, identity and legal permission to be or stay in Canada.
Step 4: Submit your application.
Step 5: Your Care Card will be mailed to you.
